Everytime I visit SunShine Village, I first look around if I still can find those small houses (Bahay Kubo) made of bamboos and straws. On my last visit, I noticed that my one favourite small house, which is the photos next page, has almost disappeared and abandoned. I later found out that the family moved to another house, which is more modern with electricity.
These small houses look like pig houses or houses for livestocks, but are the most comfortable houses to stay especially during summer time. Due to the simplistic structural design of these small houses, there is free flow of air from every corner of the house that cools the whole house in circulation.
Made of natural materials, these little houses are proven to stand any kind of weather conditions, such as typhoons and earthquakes. They are mainly framed with bamboos and palm leaves or grass (cogon) for the roof.
Bamboo is one of the strongest and most versatile building materials in the world. For one thing, it does not rust. It has a tensile strength that rivals steel and weight-to-strength ratio. Bamboo has over 1000 different types.
