Using slow learning as a common prefix, these types of learners may be found: the slow learner as an underachiever; the slow learner as mentally retarded; the slow learner as sensorily impaired; the slow learner as emotionally disturbed; and the slow learner as culturally deprived.
The idea has been expressed that there is a general term, "slow learning," that encompasses several specific types of slow learners. These slow learners may be slow because of inherent defects and/or cerebral damage, or they may be functioning slowly because of some problem that, hopefully, the school can alleviate. Some slow learners can be given a program of remedial education; others will require a complete restructuring of the traditional curriculum.
It is felt that any definition of slow learning must consider the various types of slow learners in reference to their commong learning problems and not merely be based on the observation that they learn more slowly than other children.
